Wilderness Alps of Stehekin - Inventory of 16mm Films (NCCC)
The following films were borrowed from Patrick Goldsworthy of the North Cascades Conservation Council (NCCC) for transfer to digital videotape for the Northwest Wilderness Heritage Film Preservation Project (see notes). This project was conducted in 2004 by the Mountaineers History Committee and sponsored by a grant from The Mountaineers Foundation. The film numbers listed below match stickers on the film boxes received from Patrick Goldsworthy.

W.A.S. #1:

This is the least scratched of the NCCC prints and it has the most vivid color. However, the picture is too dark and contrasty in many places, especially during the overflight from Chelan to Cascade Pass. Good sound overall but some minor clipping. There are some damaged sprocket holes about 1/3 of the way into the film, where we meet Chuck and Marion Hessey. The film skips here when projected. There are a few blips (splotches of light) near the start. Not a candidate for digital mastering.

W.A.S. #2:

This print may have the best overall color. Not as vivid as #1, but without the dark shadows. Unfortunately the film has been repaired many times, has some continuous scratches near the middle, and has a broken splice about 1/4 of the way into the film. Not a candidate for digital mastering.

W.A.S. #3:

Average picture scratchiness. Good sound. This print is very magenta; inferior to others. Not a candidate for digital mastering.

W.A.S. #4:

Average picture scratchiness. Some blips and a little clipping on the soundtrack at the start. This film is similar to #1 but less contrasty. The color is not quite as vivid and the shadows are not as dark as #1. This is the print we used for digital mastering.

W.A.S. #5:

Worse than average picture scratchiness. Bad splice and broken sprocket holes early in the film. I stopped viewing it. Not a candidate for digital mastering.

W.A.S. #6:

Scratchier than #4. No blips but worse sound clipping at the start than #4. Similar color balance to #4, but no better. This print was my 2nd choice for digital mastering.

W.A.S. #7:

Mountaineers tag at the start. Lots of badly damaged sprocket holes early in the film. I stopped viewing it. Not a candidate for digital mastering.

W.A.S. #8:

Mountaineers tag at the start. Average picture scratchiness. Quite a few blips and a little clipping on the soundtrack at the start. This print was my 3rd choice for digital mastering.

W.A.S. #9:

Scratchier than #4. Blips and skipping. Color not as good as #4. Not a candidate for digital mastering.
